Monday’s 11.00pm transfer window deadline passed without the Addicks adding to their squad, despite Guy Luzon hoping for at least two new faces.
Luzon did manage to recruit experienced free agent central defender, Roger Johnson, on Tuesday but has yet to bring the much needed target man into the club.
The Supporters Trust issued a statement on Wednesday announcing that they will be holding a meeting in the near future – possibly 18 February – to enable fans to air their views on the current situation at the club.
Charlton return to action on Saturday when they visit the Riverside to face in form Middlesbrough. Given the length of the journey, and the team’s recent form, it is perhaps not surprising that the Addicks had only sold 167 tickets by Thursday morning.
Boro’s defeat at Ipswich just before Christmas, was their only defeat in the last seventeen matches. That run includes a 2-0 FA Cup win over Manchester City at the Ethiad.
Boro are unbeaten in their last eleven outings at the Riverside, they have won the last four, conceding just one goal, so Charlton’s task could scarcely be tougher.
Luzon will have Stephen Henderson available for keeping duties again and he could come straight back in, with Marko Dmitrovic returning to the bench.
New signing Johnson is probably not fit enough to be considered for this game, so the head coach could go with an unchanged back-four of Chris Solly, Tal Ben Haim, Andre Bikey and Rhoys Wiggins.
Johnnie Jackson could come back into the central midfield equation if he has recovered from his calf injury. Luzon would have to choose two from Jackson, Yoni Buyens, Christophe Lepoint and Milos Veljkovic. Johann Gudmundsson and Jordan Cousins will probably retain the wide berths.
Luzon told the press on Thursday that Igor Vetokele is “100% fit”. That being the case, the Angolan is likely to start and will be looking to end his eleven match goal drought.
Though still short of full match fitness, Tony Watt could get his first start for the club.
Charlton may look something like this:
Henderson; Solly, Ben Haim, Bikey, Wiggins; Gudmundsson, Veljkovic, Jackson, Cousins; Vetokele, Watt.
Subs: Dmitrovic, Fox, Onyewu, Wilson, Buyens, Lepoint, Harriott.
Any sort of result would be a bonus, though Luzon told the press on Thursday that he will be adopting a positive approach:
“I’m never happy with a point before the game. I think Middlesbrough is a very good team.
“They won at Man City two weeks ago and they are a very strong team, but we need to focus about our team, about our quality and do everything to come back with the three points,” said the head coach.
