On a perfect day for rugby Medway entertained Old Alleynians in their sixth league game of the season.
They maintained their perfect record with another bonus point win and produced some excellent rugby during this game. The locals started slowly but their momentum grew as the match progressed. Their first try did not come until the 11th minute, the fourth bonus point try came after 30 minutes and then the team really hit top form in the second half scoring seven unanswered tries.
Old Alleynians started the game the better of the two sides and pinned Medway back in their own half for the first 8 minutes. Medway’s defence held firm and eventually they managed to work their way up field and into the Old Boys 22. A poor clearance kick was run back and Alfie Orris offloaded to Dan Huntley close to the try line for the Medway flanker to crash over for the opening score.
Medway extended the their lead to 28 – 0 with three quick tries on 21, 24 and 29 minutes from Luke Burns, Charlie Wardzynski, and Alfie Orris. Harvey converted all four first half tries, two of which were fantastic touch line efforts. Old Alleynians, to their credit, finished the first half with a flourish initially scoring a try after a period of concerted pressure and then were gifted an interception try as Medway tried to run back another poor clearance kick. Both tries were converted making the score 28 – 14 at the interval.
The second half was a one sided affair with Medway in full control. Their forwards were dominant at the set piece and the backs ran with pace and power that the Old Boys struggled to contain. Tries came at regular intervals and were scored by Richard Petch, Meto, Burns, Wardzynski, two for Billy Humphrey and Henry Hall. Dan Harvey kicked five out of seven conversions in the second half.
Medway were satisfied with their performance and most facets of the game plan worked well. Joe Fernyhough and Jordan Stubbington were fantastic winning their side an abundance of ball at the line outs and restarts. The front row gave the Old Boys a torrid time at scrum time and Tom Beaumont and Dan Huntley carried tirelessly throughout the game. However, man of the match went to Pete Walsh for his powerful performance in the centre.
Medway travel to second placed Old Colfieians next week which promises to be their toughest test so far this season.
