Medway 20-6 Deal & Betteshanger
Medway 20-6 Deal & Betteshanger

Same opposition as last week, but this time the venue was Priestfields, very different weather and a totally different type of game. Whereas the weather at Deal was bright sunshine, eleven tries were scored in total, this game was played in very wet conditions with only three tries late in the game all scored by the hosts.

Medway’s line-up included a number of changes for the coaches to look at different combinations and options. These changes along with the very difficult conditions and slippery ball meant that Medway were unable to build any concerted pressure during the first half.

Every time they got into a good field position they made an error enabling Deal and Betteshanger to clear their lines. In a dour and dull first half, Deal and Betteshanger kicked two penalties and Medway failed to trouble the score board, 6 – 0 to D & B at the interval.

As the second half progressed Medway adapted much better to the conditions and enjoyed the majority of possession and territory. The pressure on the Deal try line eventually told and Medway scored three tries from James Dance, Tom Beaumont and Fred Tila. Rueben Meares kicked one penalty and a conversion.

Luke Burns had a fine second half making good yards every time he got the ball. Tom Beaumont was awarded man of the match for another industrious performance at wing forward.

Not the greatest of games with the wet weather dominating proceedings. Medway deserved the victory, but as always, Deal and Betteshanger proved difficult opponents and fought to the very last.

Medway return to league action next week when they face Crowborough at home.
