Two late Sevenoaks Town goals gave them a come from behind victory against VCD Athletic and left the Vickers manager Keith McMahon very frustrated.
“We’ve just thrown three points away to be fair.” he said. “We were the better side throughout. We had a chance to go two-nil up that we missed and then a bit of fortune for their first goal and the second was offside so I’m disappointed.”
Looking back over a game in which Storm Jorge threatened to take centre stage, McMahon was pleased with the way his team had adapted. “Against the wind in the first half I thought we were good.” said McMahon. “Difficult conditions throughout the game with the hailstones and whatever but I thought we played the conditions well.
“I think they had their first shot after seventy minutes, I’m not sure. They put us under pressure when they were one-nil down with ten to go as you would imagine, but I thought that we should have defended better. The header for the first goal, we should have cleared our lines and we’ve headed into the six yard box, and the second we should have cleared.”
He continued “I thought we caused them a few more problems going forward. I thought we were the better team. Apart from a couple of minor mistakes I thought we defended really well so really disappointed to concede two goals in eight minutes.”
McMahon reiterated by saying “It was only in the last ten minutes when they pushed bodies forwards, which you would have thought they would do. Hes (Sevenoaks goalkeeper Patrick Lee) made a couple of really good saves from Charlie (MacDonald) and even at the end hes made a good save from Charlie at the near post.
“Bluey’s (VCD goalkeeper Nick Blue) had one save to make in the second half, I think, when hes come out with his feet and that’s it. For an away performance, I thought that we should have come away with three points.”
Short term aims for McMahon are pretty simple. He said “win as many games as we can. Keep going. We are a fool to ourself. Throughout the season we’ve been in winning positions so many times and thrown it away when we’ve been the better side. The odd defensive mistake has cost us. You’ve got to take it on the chin and move forward”.
Looking beyond that, McMahon said. “We’ve got to sit down. We’re a young squad. A bit more consistency and a bit more experience and we would have been right there. We’ve shown that. We have beaten most sides and we’re better than most sides but just the odd mistake has cost us too many dropped points from a winning position.”
