Hythe Town striker Alfie May will be swapping the Kent coast next week as he will fulfill a dream to play for a professional club as he’ll complete a move to SKYBet League Two promotion chasers Doncaster Rovers.
It’s a move that has left many in Kent asking why a side closer to home weren’t prepared to take a chance on the striker – and those include his current boss Clive Cook.
Talking to KSN after his sides 3-1 win at Chatham Town on Bank Holiday Tuesday, Cook was full of praise for his departing striker – he said, “He’s got one more game for me on Saturday against Faversham Town, and he’ll probably score too!”
We asked Clive to sum up Alfie’s contribution to Hythe Town in his time there. “He’s been tremendous for us, for Hythe and for me,” the manager told us.
“He’s been easy to manage; he’s been a superb young man and I’m so pleased that he’s going to a team at the next level.”
There has been much speculation that the striker would have gone to a League club much closer to home, but lack of interest and movement from other clubs prompted the enquiry from Yorkshire much to Cook’s dismay and frustration.
“I’m surprised and disappointed that he’s not going to a more local club to be fair, but Doncaster have stepped in and fair play to them for taking the chance that others wouldn’t! What came out that a certain club was keeping their eye on him was a surprise – they knew the score, they knew what you get from him after he went there for a couple of sessions. You get what you get with him – his pace in unbelievable and he just wants to play. I left him out at Chatham for his own good as you never know what may happen and then he comes on and scores a cracking goal like he did!”
The goal that Alfie scored in Medway on Tuesday afternoon was his 25th of the current season…
