The odds may now be against Gillingham reaching post-season, but defender Conor Masterson has promised the clubs fans that the players will be giving everything for the rest of the season to hopefully achieve what now seems to be mission impossible.
Speaking to KSN this week, the Irish defender told us, “We want to go out with a bang, whether in the play-offs or not, we’re not going to give up and we don’t want the fans to think that either as people can say that the towel’s been thrown in!”
“This season has been a big learning curve for me personally. I came here to play as much as possible and I think I have done that and it has been big for me,” Masterson admitted.
“Gillingham has been a big club for me in my career and the Club where I’ve settled and played my best football and I’ve really enjoyed it here.”
“The fans have been really supportive to me and that was one of the reasons that I came if I’m honest and I wanted to come back and get promoted with this team and I still aim to do that!”
“Considering where we were last year, I think we have taken a huge step forward this year. When I first arrived, I think we had fifteen points at Christmas or something like that, virtually bottom of the table,” he recalled.
“But then we got ten new players in the January and did really well. From the start we aimed for the play-offs, but it has been a huge turn from where we were to where we are now, and we will only keep getting better and better.”
“Thing is that everyone wants more don’t they? It is just the way it is! You get excited and see the players coming in, new owners, ambition, and all and our ambition this season was to get play-offs and we are still fighting for that!”
“We have come a long way from where we were, and at some point, we do have to sit back and reflect considering where we were and where we are now is a whole lot better.”
“But what we had in our mind at the start of the season and with the players that we have we wanted to be up there. We want to go out with a bang, whether in the play-offs or not, we’re not going to give up and we don’t want the fans to think that either as people can say that the towel’s been thrown in but that’s not what we feel in the dressing room or in the management staff as well.
“Stephen (Clemence) has come in and Robbie (Stockdale) and they have been really good for us with their philosophies and the Gaffer has helped me a lot and I am really enjoying working with them!”
