Having spent another successful loan spell at Gillingham, defender Conor Masterson has been talking about staying with the club.
Since his return to Priestfield on loan, Conor Masterson has kickstarted his League career and netted his first Gillingham goal last weekend in the 2-0 win over Tranmere Rovers – and was instrumental in the back four that kept its’ third clean sheet in a row…
He returned to parent club Queens Park Rangers from his first spell at the club at the end of last season, and the Irish defender didn’t think he’d be back.
“I don’t think it crossed my mind to stay,” he told KSN this week. “I was only on loan and always going back to QPR to try and use the experience with them.”
Neil Harris has always been an admirer of the defender and was quick to react in January, and his call was answered. “When Neil asked, there wasn’t a lot to think about really – I knew what he was about and had been really good too.”
“Things hadn’t gone my way completely and I wanted to come back as I’ve always enjoyed the Club and the people around it.”
“Above all, I enjoyed my football here so I wanted to come back.”
“I’m at a stage now where I think I’m looking for a place to call home. I’m 24 and still young-ish but I think I would like to find somewhere now to stay.”
“Neil is a great guy and I have a lot of respect for him and Dave Livermore – they’re really top coaches and as you can see, we’re getting the results that we want now and we’re all really enjoying our football.”
“My partnership with Max (Ehmer) is great – he’s brilliant! He’s got all the experience and is a good talker – it’s strange because he’s not really a shouter but between the two of us, positionally as well, I think that we work well together as he knows my strengths and I know his.”
“Glenn (Morris) has got so much experience behind us – he knows the game inside out and he’s great – so calm behind us – and he helps us a lot. The way we’ve been going and the way we will continue to go, I feel confident at the three of us and really enjoying it.”
“I knew what I was coming back to as there were a lot of good players coming in when the manager had the players he was trying to get, and I knew that we’d do well!”
“But of course it’s a surprise that we’ve won as many games as we’ve won in the short period of time considering where the team were, but long may it continue with us all enjoying our football!”
“I just focus on my own game – I do look at QPR – but all I need to focus on is playing my own football really. The positive feel all-round the place is very good and I think everyone is enjoying the “new” Gillingham.”
“The new owners have come in and changed the club a lot and I think all the fans are really enjoying it. It’s a totally different Gillingham this year – when I came in last year we were doing all right, but it really does now feel like a club on the up which hopefully will be a force in the future.”
