Margate announce Whitnell capture

Margate Football Club have announced the signing of striker Tommy Whitnell from Cray Wanderers, on a one year contract.

Tommy joins former teammate Sam Long at Hartsdown Park as Chris Kinnear’s squad for the 2012/13 season begins to take shape.

After starting out as a promising young forward with the Wands in 2009, Whitnell became a regular goal scorer with Blue Square Bet South Welling United. But after finding his options more limited by the form of Andy Pugh and Luis Cumbers at Park View Road in 2010, he left the Wings and signed for Maidstone United.

He then moved on to Croydon Athletic before re-signing for Cray for the 2011/12 season.

With 25 goals in 48 appearances last season for Ian Jenkins’ side, his strike rate was better than one in two. His last two goals were ironically against Margate in the Wands’ 3-1 win at Hartsdown Park in April. To add to the irony, recent signing Sam Long opened the scoring for the visitors that day.
