Margate lost the chance to catch up on the leaders in the League with a defeat against mid table team Bury Town.
Bury arrived later than scheduled but this did not hinder them as when the game started they took the lead in 13 seconds when the ball went out wide on the right & Ryan Semple low cross saw Elloitt Cox practically on his knees head straight to Billy Clark who from 10 yards shot home.
Margate after that shocking start got back into the game & in the 5th minute Warren Whitely 25 yards out saw his shot pushed over the bar by Marcus Garnham & from the resulting corner Garnham saved from Phil Walsh’s header.
In the 9th minute Margate equalised when Whitely on the right wing jinked in & his cross caused confusion & the ball fell at Jack Sammoutis’s feet & he shot in.
Another chance came three minutes later when Craig Holloway bowled the ball out to Matt Bodkin who ran down the left wing before releasing Ryan Dolby & his cross into the area found Charles Ademeno six yards out but under pressure from the defender his shot was easily saved by Garnham.
In the 23rd minute a Margate free kick into the area found Walsh & his header forced Garnham to tip over the bar. Another half chance came in the 37th minute when a long ball forward saw Ademeno chase it & Garnham came out of his area & they both went for the ball with Ademeno winning the challenge but unfortunately the header went wide.
Margate were now chasing the second goal & in the 40th minute George Craddock put Ademeno in but his shot was saved & then cleared & a minute later a cross into the Bury area saw Walsh flick it on for Bodkin & his shot hit the side netting.
The second half started very slowly with both sides guilty of giving the ball away but in the 66th minute Bury took the lead when the ball on the left was crossed low to the edge of the penalty area where the ball fell to Patrick Gordon & from 18 yards he shot past Holloway.
For the rest of the game Margate huffed & puffed there way to try & get an equaliser with Bury relying on break aways.
Another half chance came in the 70th minute when the ball in the Bury area was half cleared to Paul Vines whose acrobatic shot went just wide of the post.
Another glorious chance came in the 77th minute when Vines header was pushed away by Garnham but only to John Beales & his shot was saved by Garnham.
The game petered out with Bury taking the three points back to Suffolk.
