March is traditionally one of the busiest months in the football calendar. A good set of results can be the springboard to promotion for a club, whereas an indifferent month can spell the end of their promotion aspirations.
The battle for a League One play-off spot is intensifying, and Charlton will play a number of teams around them in the table over the next few weeks.
They start the month with a trio of away games. Weather permitting, they travel to AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, followed by trips to Peterborough and Blackpool.
Karl Robinson will probably target a seven point haul from these games. Kingsmeadow is not an easy place to go to though, despite the Dons’ lowly league position.
Peterborough have play-off aspirations of their own. They currently sit one place and one point behind the Addicks, having played a game more.
Blackpool is probably the fixture that the manager is most confident of winning. It is one of Charlton’s games in hand.
Originally scheduled for last month, it had to be called off late on, due to a waterlogged pitch.
Blackpool’s near neighbours – Fleetwood – make the long trip to The Valley four days later, followed by promotion chasing Plymouth the following Saturday.
The Pilgrims progress has been remarkable. They were bottom of the league earlier in the season but have totally turned their campaign round. They now have two points more than the south Londoners, but have played two games more.
The Addicks’ final game in March sees them travel to Northampton on Good Friday. The Cobblers have had their travails this season, and this is a game Charlton will be expected to win.
But the pressure just keeps on coming, three days later, on Easter Monday, fellow promotion chasers Rotherham visit The Valley.
Robinson team have to get a decent points haul from their next seven games if they are to keep their promotion dream alive. Their will scarcely be time to rectify the situation if they don’t.
