Managers Neil Smith and Dean Frost have lots to work on after Tuesday’s derby between Bromley and Welling United.
Victory for Bromley, their third in a row, saw them all but guarantee safety from relegation.
However another defeat for Welling, their fifth consecutive pointless and goal-less game, means their three year stay in the Vanarama National League is looking less and less likely to continue.
After their loss at home to Aldershot on Saturday, Wings manager Dean Frost bemoaned their lack of a big target man. As if to prove his point, the Lilywhites had Adam Cunnington up front and he was a handful throughout.
Just nine minutes had passed when he held up play before laying off to Rohdell Gordon who took his time before thrashing home off the underside of the bar.
Once more, Welling were left chasing the game and Frost again stated that his team desperately needs to score the first goal to have something to hold on to.
There is no chance of him adding a target man without someone going out. “I’ve got no money and if someone is going to go, it’s got to be the right person and done the right way.”
Injuries have not helped his cause and it was frustrating for him looking at the quality of players sitting in the stand. “We were down to the bare sixteen, and two of them were playing for nothing. In the Conference!”
Moses Emmanuel made the game safe in the second half when converting a penalty after going down in the area. “I thought it was a penalty although I was sixty yards away.” said Frost. “It was a messy challenge.”
On Saturday they entertain Vanarama National League leaders Cheltenham Town and they will need to get over the latest defeat quickly. “They are disappointed and I want them to be for an hour or a few hours but they need to come in for training on Thursday and go again.”.
As pleased as Bromley manager Neil Smith was to win, he conceded that the game was not a great spectacle. “If we win ugly like we did today, then great but I don’t like doing that. You’re giving teams opportunities. They could have had numerous goals today but for (Alan) Julian, and that’s not good enough for my team.
“I had a go at them at half time. They’ve lifted themselves and got a goal and thought to themselves ‘I don’t have to work hard again’. It was a good win but a disappointing performance from the level we’ve set over the last few weeks.
“I think we played better against Grimsby and we lost. That’s giving credit to Welling who made it very difficult for us. They did their management proud and they never gave up today.”
He did have some praise for some of his team, other than goalkeeper Julian. “Rohdell’s come in on loan from Stevenage and he’s been a revelation. It’s like he’s been here all the time. I’ve spoken to their management about him. I can’t give the club and him enough credit.
“Adam (Cunnington) has come in for the last few games since his concussion and has worked his socks off. He’s keeping good players like Ben May and Alex Wall out of the team. I want competition for places so no-one is just being given a shirt. They’ve got to go and earn it.
“I still want to entertain the supporters as well as getting the results. That’s the thing that really disappointed me today.”
