Maidstone Ladies reclaim national league spot

National outdoor league team Maidstone won the East region national league qualifying competition for the 2nd consecutive year earning themselves another tilt at National Indoor Hockey.

A delighted club chairman Roger Daniels said “this is yet another well deserved and high standard win for the girls. Maidstone is a national league club and for the girls to be competing both outdoor and indoor at that level is fantastic”

The format involved 5 matches played over two days. Maidstone won all 5 with tournament stats of P5 W5 goals for 24 against 4. The team played skilfully and defended exceptionally well under the guidance of  coach Tom Nissen.

Maidstone played outstanding indoor hockey to win this regional qualifier for the second year running. Maidstone took an early lead against local rivals Holcombe.

Immediately after half time increased it to 2-0 before losing Lizzie Daniels to a nasty stick follow through in the eye. She took no further part in the game but her fellow team players worked tirelessly and scored a couple more great goals to win comfortably 4-0.

Maidstone attacked Crostyx from the start and were 4-0 up after 5minutes. With solid shape and some excellent saves by Captain and keeper Jenny Vincent, Maidstone sealed a 6-0 win through Jess Cremin’s hat trick.

The Lincoln match started furiously with fast end to end play before jess’s second hat trick of Penalty corner conversions. Hannah Durston added another and Lizzie scrambled home her first of the tournament for a 5-0 win.

Maidstone won pool A handsomely, winning all 3 matches scoring 15 goals and conceding none, a rare indoor feat achieved by splendid teamwork, discipline and hard concentrated work from everyone.

Onto the day 2 round robin with Cambridge City attacking from the start but Maidstone deserved a 2-0 lead at half time and increased the lead to 3 before conceding their first goal of the weekend. Frantic attacks from City who pulled another back but calm team work ensured another converted pc gave Maidstone a 4-2 win.

Only needing a draw to qualify Maidstone completed the formality with ease and ran out 5-2 winners over Waltham Forest.

Maidstone will play in the Maxifuel Super Sixes div 2 South at the Whitgift School, Croydon over the weekend of 7/8th January where they hope to go one better than last year and qualify for the  Division 2 North and South tournament  later on 21st/22nd January.
