Mahoney keen to extend Gills season
Mahoney keen to extend Gills season

Connor Mahoney heads back to his native North-West this weekend looking to release the shackles as Gillingham go in search of three much needed points at Morecambe in the League Two Play Off chase.

After taking just two points from the last twelve, the Gills head North still just a solitary point outside of the Play Off places with it all to play for in the season’s final seven games.

Speaking to KSN at this week’s briefing, the on-loan Huddersfield Town midfielder told us, “We’ve got seven games left of the regular season – hopefully a few more after that – it’s been positive and I’ve enjoyed the season here as a whole and just looking forward to the rest of it now.”

“The belief is still there – if we go to Saturday and win, we will be right back up there again. I know teams have games in hand on us at the moment, but for me, I would rather have the points on the table.”

“They might have games in hand, but that means nothing – those games are easily lost – we just need to look at ourselves going forward and win as many games as possible to see where we are at the end of the season.”

Reflecting on last weekend’s draw with Grimsby Town, Mahoney said, “It was frustrating that we did not get the three points, especially the way we played and coming off the second half of the Tranmere game as well.”

“We wanted to carry that on, and I think we did, but whilst it was another point, I think that we really should be winning games like that,” he admitted.

“We missed a few chances and the game’s done now and we’re focused on Saturday and Morecambe and hopefully if I get a chance, I’ll put it in the back of the net!”

The midfielder then spoke about his own future and the chances of staying at Priestfield beyond this current campaign.

“I am out of contract in the summer, so it is something that I will probably address in the summer after the season has finished.”

“I will spend some time with my family and go from there; I have really enjoyed it here and for me at the moment, playing football is the main thing in my career now and the next step for me will just be to continue playing football and wherever that may be, will be exciting.”

“Mentally it does take a toll on you if you’re not doing what you want to be doing, so I spoke to the people close to me and said that if I’m playing football, that’s the main issue for me, so we’ve addressed that situation this season and will look at it going forward.”

“The Gills fans have been brilliant with me – I have had a lot of messages telling me that they want me to stay, and I do read them!”

“They have been superb, and I was surprised how many fans we take to the away games and hopefully they will keep backing us for the final seven games and help us get over the line.”
