Macclesfield Town v Welling Utd preview

Following their midweek trip to Forest Green Rovers, Welling United are back on their travels on Saturday, visiting Macclesfield Town.

FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

Both teams have been involved in two tight low scoring games so far this season. Welling have won and lost their games 1-0 versus Guiseley and at Forest Green Rovers respectively.

Meanwhile, the Silkmen lost 1-0 at Torquay United on Saturday, and were held 0-0 at home to Southport, who had a penalty saved by Shwan Jalal.

When the two teams met at Moss Rose in February, the hosts twice came from behind to defeat the ten men Wings in an eventful game.

Dominic Vose put Welling ahead in the 20th minute but Waide Fairhurst equalised from the penalty spot ten minutes later after Darren Purse was adjudged to have handled.

There were no further goals in the first period and things did not look good for Welling when Anthony Jeffrey was dismissed for a second bookable offence. Jason Williams defied the odds by putting the visitors ahead in the 68th minute but a brace from Matthew Barnes-Homer ensured Welling claimed all three points.

Despite the defeat at Forest Green Rovers, Welling will travel to Cheshire in high spirits. “Macclesfield will be another tough place to go but we are coming off the back of 2 good performances so will go into that game with full confidence that we can come way with something.” said Loui Fazakerley.

“We created a couple of really clear cut chances before they scored their pretty fortunate goal. It took a pretty big deflection but that’s what happens when you don’t take your chances when you’re on top, it usually comes back to bite you. We will work on our finishing over the next couple of training sessions as goals win you games and we need to take more of our chances.”

Sam Corne missed the game at Forest Green after taking a knock in the Guiseley match but is expected to be available on Saturday. Harry Osborne should also be in contention for the Wings.

One definite absentee for Macclesfield will be Andy Halls following his dismissal on Tuesday evening.
