Despite there being little expectation, Welling were still distraught to come away from Macclesfield empty handed.
Third placed Macclesfield were expected to brush the Wings away, however they were pushed all the way and were very fortunate to claim the points.
New signings Anthony Jeffrey and Jason Williams made their Welling debuts whilst illness meant Karl Duguid and Rowan Vine were unable to travel.
Jody Brown’s Wings started strongly and Dominic Vose came close with an early free kick.
It took a Welling mistake to allow Macclesfield a chance but Jon Henly made a fine block from Matthew Barnes-Horner and Paul Lewis followed up with a shot that he scuffed wide.
A combination between the two new signings set up the chance for Welling to go ahead when the outstanding Dominic Vose rose to guide his header home.
Almost immediately, Paul Turnbull fired a free kick against the post with Henly beaten.
Another excellent Jeffrey run and cross was finished by Williams, however he had pulled it back from just beyond the bye-line.
Against the run of play, Macclesfield equalised when Darren Purse was struck on the arm at point blank range inside the penalty area. Although the decision appeared harsh, Waide Fairhurst was not to be distracted and stepped up to fire home.
Vose came close to regaining the lead for the Wings with a curler that went just beyond the far post.
Half a minute after the two additional minutes had been completed, Jeffrey mistimed a tackle and was punished with a second yellow card leaving Welling to play the second period with ten men.
Straight after the break, Henly claimed an easy header from Turnball but Welling soon claimed control despite being a man short.
Danger man Vose looked to be clear but was fouled by Andy Halls who was cautioned eventually.
Soon after, Welling went back ahead. Reece Harris’ dangerous cross was knocked out as far as Joe Healy and his clever header found Jason Williams in space to finish with a deft touch beyond Rhys Taylor.
All appeared to be good for Welling as Macclesfield showed little idea of getting back into the game until the visitors committed football suicide.
Chris Bush brought down a long cross on his chest but failed to launch the ball away allowing Barnes-Homer to lob over Henly and into the net.
With momentum now in their favour, Macclesfield searched for a winner and found it when Adriano Moke broke free down the right wing and crossed for Barnes-Homer to head home.
Jody Brown said “ We should be celebrating breaking the best home record in the conference, the team who are third in the league, and who’ve just been awarded manager of the month. I didn’t think things went in our favour in terms of decisions but we swallowed it. There’s no hiding the fact that when you make an individual mistake like that you let them back into it.”
