Welling’s four game unbeaten run came to an end with a disappointing defeat at Macclesfield.
Chris Holroyd came closed early on but he could only direct his header the wrong side of the near post and he almost feasted on a Peter Winn cross soon after.
A spanner was put in Welling’s works when Blaine Hudson pulled up with a hamstring strain in the 25th minute. Loick Pires was introduced as Welling reorganised their team.
Jack Obersteller’s cross was headed wide by Kurtis Guthrie before Connor Jennings sliced wide for Macclesfield.
Despite having to drop back into defence, Gallagher still managed a break down the left and his cross was helped by Guthrie and Joe Healy to Loui Fazakerley whose fierce drive flew back off the post.
Jack Mackreth hit a low cross-shot that Lee Butcher claimed comfortably in the last action of the half.
Butcher was in action early in the second half when Holroyd sent Connor Jennings through but the Wings keeper blocked with his legs before Jack Mackreth shot well wide.
Guthrie and Healy had shots wide and blocked respectively before Macclesfield scored twice in three minutes.
Holroyd burst through and was felled as he rounded Butcher. As the ball broke loose, Jennings followed up to slot home.
In the 74th minute, Andy Halls crossed for Holroyd to head home.
Eight minutes remained when Welling pulled one back. Fazakerley crossed for Ross Lafayette to head home his sixth goal of the season.
An incredible come back was almost completed in the final minute but Pires was unable to keep his header down from another Fazakerley cross.
