Damien Matthew and Ben Roberts will, after all, take charge of Charlton’s match at Watford on Saturday.

Guy Luzon

The club issued the following statement on Friday evening:

“Charlton are disappointed to announce that Guy Luzon will not be able to take charge of the team at Watford on Saturday due to issues with his UK work permit.

Following his appointment on Tuesday evening, the club had expected the required paperwork to be finalised in time for the Head Coach to take his place in the dugout at Vicarage Road.

However, his work permit was not processed before the required deadline.

First-Team Coach Damian Matthew and Goalkeeping Coach Ben Roberts will now take temporary charge of the side at Watford.

It is expected that Luzon will receive his work permit next week and make his debut as Addicks boss at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, January 24th (3pm).”

There is no elaboration on what the ‘issues’ are but it is believed the necessary paperwork was not processed in time. However, if Luzon had no permit, surely he should not have been taking sessions at Sparrows Lane this week? Will he be allowed to enter the training ground again before the permit is received?

Harry Redknapp has stated that QPR’s 33-year-old former England winger, Shaun Wright-Phillips, has turned down opportunities to go on loan to either Blackburn or Charlton. It is the second time that Greenwich born Wright-Phillips has spurned a move to The Valley.
