Lordswood march on to Wembley with an emphatic victory over the Helenic League side Carterton, the £1000 prize money will help & they are now in the last 64 of the country with the draw on Monday.
The game started with a bang as within 13 seconds Carterton surprised everyone when Jack Dunmall 25 yards out saw his shot beat Jack Bradshaw but come back off the crossbar.
Six minutes later Lordswood had their first chance of the game when Enoch Adjei’s cross found Nad Nwitua in the area & he turned & shot but Joe White saved easily.
Two minutes later & Carterton could have taken the lead when Chris Gilkes went down the right wing & his low cross into the area was just about to get to Ryan Curtin when up popped Jack Hope to get a toe to it & concede a corner.
In the 11th minute Lordswood took the lead when Grant Brown threaded the ball into the area for Adjei who slid the ball past the advancing White.
The game went quiet for a while as both teams got to grips with the strong winds & then in the 28th minute Timmy Babington saw his 25 yard volley pushed over the bar by White & then in the 32nd minute Lordswood increased their lead when a ball played into Ben Francis in the area & he was hauled down by Ollie Oswin & a penalty was given, up stepped Nwitua who knocked it into the bottom left hand corner.
Carterton came back strongly from the disappointment of giving two goals away & in the space of two minutes they nearly pulled a goal back, when in the 38th minute Mark Threlfall saw his free kick just outside the area tipped over the bar by Bradshaw & then a free kick to the back post found Simon Calley but he headed into the sidenetting.
The last chance of the half came in the 42nd minute when Francis on halfway turned the defender & ran forward before shooting from 22 yards but it went just past the post.
The second half saw Carterton come more into the game & in the 49th minute Ryan Curtin found himself in the penalty area & his quick shot was saved by Bradshaw.
Four minutes later it was Lordswood’s turn as Babington in the area saw his shot easily saved by White. In the 57th minute Dan Sadler saw his 25 yarder tipped over the bar by Bradshaw, in the very next minute Threlfall saw his 20 yard free kick tipped over the bar again by Bradshaw.
Lordswood calmed their nerves in the 64th minute when Brown’s free kick into the area was headed clear but straight to Brown who then out of the blue fired in a shot from 25 yards beating White & ending up in the back of the net.
In the 67th minute Carterton pulled a goal back when Gilkes shot from 25 yards was deflected past a flat footed Bradshaw.
Goals always seem to get the confidence flowing & Carterton started to believe they could get back into the game & in the 76th minute Curtin in the area passed out to Dunmall & his shot from the angle was saved by Bradshaw’s legs for a corner, in the very next minute Babington on halfway ran forward & tried his luck from 25 yards but saw it fly over the bar.
In the 82nd minute it was nearly two for Carterton as a cross field pass found Jack Head in acres of space on the right & went into the area & tried to chip Bradshaw but he got a finger tip to it to concede a corner & from this corner a scramble occurred & the ball ended up hitting the post & then cleared.
Lordswood finally got rid of everyone’s nerves in the 86th minute when a long ball forward saw White come out of his area & try to clear but under pressure he miskicked it & Babington rose beating White to it & headed goalwards & Brendon Cass like all good forwards followed it in & smashed it into an empty net.
The final whistle went & joy for the men in orange as they continue their march to Wembley.
