Juraj Huska and Billy Phillips both netted hat-tricks on Saturday night to power the Dynamos beyond the London Raiders with a 9-4 win against the Lee Valley based outfit that plants the team top of their NIHL Southern Cup group.

The opening frame saw a scrappy start with the Mos marginally outshooting their hosts by 16 to 11 but it would take until three minutes from the buzzer for one of those to register on the scoreboard.

At 17.10 it was former Romford blue liner Billy Phillips who broke the deadlock – the defenceman who has spent much of his career with the Raiders playing as though he had a point to prove and rifling in beyond Michael Gray with Greg Chambers claiming the assist for 1-0.

A hooking minor to Phil Manny then gifted the Dynamos a powerplay and they made it count at 19.00 exactly – Phillips doubling up with another thumping drive that left the netminder a mere spectator. A strong finish to the frame would only get better just 13 seconds later – Callum Fowler carving out the space for Andy Smith to fire in for the 3-0 advantage with just 20 minutes gone.

In the second period the Dynamos were commanding and it took less than five minutes for them to make their three goal lead a four goal cushion – 24.56 the moment when Anthony Leone and Callum Fowler linked up before Juraj Huska tallied whilst Tom Davis sat in the box on a cross checking minor.

At 28.45 Charlie Phillips then fell afoul of a ten minute misconduct penalty to threaten the Mos’ dominance and, when Grant Baxter and Arran Strawson joined him in the box soon after, the Raiders replied to cut their deficit to 4-1. Frankie Harvey and Danny Marshall were both involved in the build-up before the lethal Jakub Klima finally found a way beyond Chris Douglas to break the home side’s duck.

His strike was swiftly cancelled out however – the Dynamos adding a fifth courtesy of Juraj Huska at 34.48 for the commanding 5-1 lead. It was a lead that would be extended again before the break – Greg Chambers and Andy Smith exchanging passes before Billy Phillips found the net for the third time at 39.25 to complete his first senior hat-trick and all against the team whose jersey he had worn in 2013/14.

6-1 up going into the last the Dynamos were exactly where they wanted to be and they enjoyed an even greater level of comfort just ten seconds after the restart – the clock showing 40.10 when Anthony Leone and Steve Osman combined to allow Juraj Huska a hat-trick completing third. To their credit though the Raiders, now 7-1 down, rallied and hit back with a trio of goals to cut their sizeable deficit to 7-4.

The first of the three came at 44.38 – AJ Smith and Vaclav Drabek claiming assists as Tom Davis beat Chris Douglas from close range to answer for the home side. The second would follow at 45.11 – Smith and Drabek again the architects but Stephen Deacon the man to fire in this time around for 7-3.

The strike was the catalyst for tensions to spill over with Deacon then guilty of a check from behind on Charlie Phillips almost immediately after – a check that saw Billy Phillips seek retribution and tossed from the tie for roughing. On the resulting powerplay London claimed their last of the evening – 48.13 showing on the clock as Jacob Ranson teed up captain AJ Smith for his team’s fourth of the night.

However despite the Raiders mini revival the Dynamos would see out the tie the stronger and they added a pair close to time to seal a comfortable 9-4 victory. The first came on the powerplay at 52.57 – Tom Davis in the box again as Nicky Lewis and Andy Smith claimed assists when Steve Osman fired beyond Michael Gray for his third point of the night.

The last then came as late as 59.57 – Smith and Callum Fowler involved in the build-up before Lewis rounded off a good evening for the Mos to complete the five goal win.

So it was a victory and an emphatic one for the Dynamos who made it two from two in the NIHL Southern Cup to top their group and put themselves in prime position to qualify for the next round.
