Gillingham Women beat Cheltenham Town Ladies on Sunday afternoon at a cold Bauvill Stadium leaving coach Dan Logue pleased.
The win secured back to back League wins and move comfortably into a mid table position in the Women’s National League South.
Goals from Ellie Jeffkins and Georgia Griffin secured the points in an eventful game, and after the game coach Dan Logue was a relieved and very happy man when KSN caught up with him.
“It was a big game for us today and to come away with three points is great when we weren’t at our best – it was a little bit scrappy and the game got on top of us at points, but to come away with the points at the end, we deserved it I think!”
“No one really wanted to get hold of the game to start with and it became like a basketball match to a point as it went end to end – it was scrappy all round.”
“That said, we did have periods of the game where we controlled it and played some nice stuff – we’re still in transition since the takeover of the Club, and we’ve changed the way that we’re looking to play since I came in which means the girls are still getting used to it.”
“We can look at it and say that we’re on target but we can do better.”
“There were some strange decisions out there,” a bemused manager admitted, “but it is what it is!”
The two goals in the ninety minutes equalled the haul in the previous four home games, a point that Logue was only too well aware of.
“We said it in the dressing room before the game – we can’t rely on Breon to score all the goals for us so we need more to step up to the plate.”
“So fair play to the girls today – Ellie did, GG did and then we had the one that was disallowed from Kara (Fordjour). That’s three more having found the net that will hopefully give them the confidence going forward.”
“It was great having another crowd of just under 200 today, and that’s a credit to the club who push the games and push the club a lot – it’s great to see so many young girls here to watch the players who they can aspire to be.”
“We’re in the middle of seven homes game in a row across six weeks… and being at home should always give you an advantage, but when you haven’t been at home for a lot of the season and it’s a new home as well, that advantage isn’t quite there.”
“But we train here now so the girls know the environment and they understand it, so I see this run of games as a positive because with the crowd backing and the girls getting used to being here, we can build some momentum.”
