With the ’emergency’ loan window about to close, managers will soon have to make do with whatever players they currently have at their disposal.
Clubs will be able to exercise recall clauses that they have inserted in the contracts of any players they have loaned out.
One player Chris Powell may choose to recall is last season’s top scorer, Bradley Wright-Phillips. It is strange that Danny Green – who topped Charlton’s assists chart last term – along with last season’s top scorer ,have been deemed surplus to requirements.
Green has been overlooked for the pragmatism of Wilson and Pritchard this season and, along with Wright-Phillips, was set to join Swindon on loan in January. The dual deal collapsed because the Football League would not sanction any registrations from the Wiltshire club at the time.
Green has remained a peripheral figure at The Valley, while Wright-Phillips has been on loan at Brentford.
Wright-Phillips’ time at Griffin Park has hardly been a roaring success but he is a player whose goals have always come in streaks. In his first season at The Valley he started off well before ending the season with a lengthy goal scoring drought. Last season he netted 22 goals but had a barren lasting 14 games between mid-November and late February.
Jonathan Obika arrived from Tottenham as Wright-Phillips’ replacement and has failed to impress. Obika has made just one start and failed even to make an appearance from the bench in the last game against Millwall, despite the fact that the Addicks were chasing a two goal deficit.
The Addicks have a tough run-in and have a five point cushion between them and the drop zone. The manager may decide he needs his most prolific scorer back at the club.
