Lisbie turned down Gillingham move

Out of contract striker Kevin Lisbie has revealed he has rejected the chance to play for Gillingham again.

The 32 year old former Colchester United and Charlton Athletic striker was released by Ipswich Town in the summer and has as yet not managed to find himself a new club.

Having finished last season on loan at Millwall, Lisbie admits he is hoping to find himself a new club soon:

“Well, being a free agent means that transfer windows don’t really apply to me, but it looks like I will be joining a Championship club to train with Monday, so I’ll take it from there really.

“There has been some interest lately, but nothing really concrete, so I’m hoping things will pick up a bit now that the transfer window has closed.

“Obviously, the free agents are the ones allowed to join a club now, so that gives us a slight advantage and we will see what happens.”

Lisbie played seven games for the Gills whilst on loan at the end of the 1998/99 season, scoring four goals in the process, but admits despite being offered the chance of a return to Priestfield, he wasn’t interested:

“I spoke with both Gillingham and Southend at the beginning of pre-season and they were both interested in offering me something, but I’d prefer to play at a higher level, to be honest.

“I feel that dropping down to League Two would be a massive jump having played in the Championship last season.

“I’m quite fit and I would like to leave the option of playing in either the Championship or League One open as long as possible really.”

With Gillingham in need of bringing in another striker as soon as possible, and the loan window opening on Wednesday, it seems certain Andy Hessenthaler will have to switch his attention to bringing in a goalscorer ideally before Saturday’s game with Accrington Stanley at Priestfield.
