Free scoring Chatham Town held on to their place at the top of the table courtesy of an excellent win at Erith Town.
After the game, Chats manager, Scott Lindsey gave his thoughts on the contest. “I enjoyed it.” he said “I thought we played really well especially in the second half. We said at half time, we came in two-two, we’re not sure that their game plan can work in the second half because of the conditions.
“If we play to our potential, we know that we’re going to score goals because we’ve got goals in our team. First half they played to their advantages in terms of long throws and corners, and put us under immense pressure, they got their two goals, fair play to them but I didn’t feel as if they could continue that in the second half and I know that we’ve got goals in us. I actually really enjoyed the game.”
Although they have averaged nearly five and a half goals a game, they are also conceding. Lindsey said “I said to the players that it’s important that we try and start keeping clean sheets. I think that we’ll always score. I don’t think there will ever be a game when we don’t score so keeping clean sheets will win games.
“At the moment we have to give credit to the way we play as well. We play expansive football and it sometimes leaves us open and sometimes it can bite us in the backside, as it were, but knowing that we’ve got goals in the team, we’re not going to change from what we do.”
Six different players scored six entirely different goals from well worked team goals to spectacular long range efforts. Lindsey purred “We’ve got players in the team that can hurt the opposition. I think Reece Butler, the centre half, is on five or six now this season. We’ve got goals in wide areas, we’ve got goals from our number ten. Our striker obviously scores a lot of goals so, yes, we’ve got players all over the pitch who can put it in the net.”
All their goals have come despite experienced striker Andy Pugh being side-lined. Lindsey added “Pughie’s worked his socks off getting himself fit. He’s not far off now so he’s to come into it as well. His goalscoring record throughout his career has been big so he’s another one to add to it.”
There are no Southern Counties East Football League midweek fixtures this week. “It’s the first one since we started.” he said “It will be good for us. Because we’ve won a lot of games, one of the players had the shout of can we have Tuesday off and I said no because we’ve got a lot of work to get through. We’ve got a big game next Saturday in Hollands and Blair at home so we need to make sure that we get some work done on Tuesday and it’s a chance for the players to recover as well.”
Other teams near the top scored late winners to keep the pressure on but but he was not unduly concerned saying. “We can only concentrate on us, whatever they do they do, good for them, but if we win every game we’ll win the league so that’s what we’ve got to try and concentrate on.
“I quite like being top. It’s nice because it shows that we’re the best team in the league at the moment so we’ve just got to continue that.”
