Lincoln City vs Gillingham preview

An in-form Gillingham travel to Lincoln City on Saturday, and could end the day just two points off the play-off places in League One.

The Gills are unbeaten in 14 league games right now. Their opponents, however, have lost  five of their last six, with the other being a draw.

Last time out, Gillingham were far from their best but managed to secure a 1-0 victory away at Southend. Lincoln, meanwhile, lost 4-3 against Accrington last Saturday.

Gills boss Steve Evans will be boosted by the potential return of midfielder Stuart O’Keefe, who missed Tuesday’s win through injury. Likewise, Southampton loanee Alfie Jones, who was an unused substitute in Essex following an injury layoff, is ready to feature if required.

Perhaps the key attraction will be John Akinde, who is set to start for Gillingham after joining the Blues from Lincoln in January in what some have claimed to be controversial circumstances.

Lincoln, meanwhile, will be without start man Joe Morrell, as he completes a two-game suspension after accumulating 10 yellow cards this season. Injury wise, however, they are clear.

Gillingham can take confidence from their performance in the reverse fixture. The Blues beat Lincoln 1-0 at Priestfield back in November thanks to a Mikael Mandron strike and were well worth their three points on the day.

Admittedly, this is a different Lincoln team. Manager Michael Appleton had just joined the Imps last time, whereas now he’s had almost four months in the job. January signings mean the personnel is different, too, although their poor form is not to be ignored.

That said, Gillingham will need to be at their best to get the win, as is often the case in League One away games. Despite winning three in a row, the Gills haven’t played up to their usual standards as of late.

Time will tell if Gillingham can get the win – maybe then Blues fans will begin to dream.
