Gillingham will look to keep their play-off hopes alive with victory at promotion chasing Lincoln City this evening.
Steve Evans’ side go into the game at League One’s third placed side knowing a win will see them step that bit closer to the top six after Saturday’s 3-1 win at rivals Swindon Town.
Evans is expected to once again keep faith with the starting eleven that has served him so well in recent weeks, although striker John Akinde is pushing for a recall to the starting eleven after coming off the bench and impressing at The County Ground.
Lincoln will prove to be a formidable opposition and when the two sides met back on Friday February 5th in front of the TV cameras at Priestfield, it was the visitors that took the 3 points with a 3-0 win, although the scoreline flattered as The Gills were more than a match for most of the game.
For Steve Evans, going to Sincil Bank will be a tough test, but one he believes his Gillingham side are more than up for and could come away with all three points:
“We have to find a way to be able to combat what they’re about.”
“They’re a top side but it will make interesting reading if we bring something back from Sincil Bank. Then we’re set up with two humdingers after that in Doncaster Rovers and Hull City.”
“All the pressure tomorrow night is on Lincoln City. Big budget teams need to get promoted.”
“We will have to be at our best; all the expectation is on them.”
Both Alex MacDonald and Robbie McKenzie are also pushing for places in the starting eleven, but Evans seems set to keep faith with the likes of Olly Lee, Kyle Dempsey and Tom O’Connor in a robust, but attacking midfield.
Gillingham go into the game sitting 11th in League One, four points outside the play-off places, but crucially having played two more games than Ipswich Town who sit sixth.
A win tonight and the dream could still be alive, defeat and that dream may all be but over for another season.
