Lights got out on VCD at Brentwood

On what looked a difficult surface at the Brentwood Arena on Thursday evening VCD’s game at Brentwood was abandoned after 60 minutes due to floodlight failure.20140731_191741[1]

The visitors came into the game ringing the changes after Tuesday’s 3-1 over Dartford with many familiar faces either on the bench or not in the travelling squad.

In the early exchanges both sides had opportunities to score. VCD’s Duckworth received the ball on the left touchline and heading towards goal, he laid the ball off but the incoming effort was easily saved by the hosts’ ‘keeper.

The home side then forced VCD back twice in quick succession with the ‘keeper having to be aware and saving well after a long ball behind the visitors back line and after hesitation on the edge of their own penalty area VCD were pleased to see Brentwood blaze the ball over the bar.

Soon after the home side forced a decent save from VCD’s ‘keeper who stretched well above his head to claw a goal-bound header away from goal.

Just after the half hour VCD were close to taking the lead but Lee Bremner’s close range header fell narrowly wide of the left hand post and moments later the visitors had the ball in the back of the net but Bremner was adjudged to have fouled the ‘keeper when jumping for the high ball.

Brentwood had a goal of their own disallowed after a cracking 25yd effort was tipped onto the bar and the rebound was disallowed for offside. Seconds later the home side again hit the crossbar from long range.

Despite the pressure from the home side, VCD took the lead five minutes from half time – Bremner found room in the left side of the penalty area and scored placing the ball under the advancing ‘keeper.

Ten minutes into the second half the hosts had a great opportunity in front of goal 6yds out but it was spurned as it was struck well over the crossbar. Moments later the hosts again blazed over from close range.

Five minutes later and on the hour mark VCD’s luck ran out as Brentwood equalised – A raking diagonal ball was well headed past the visiting ‘keeper from close range.

But within seconds the game was abandoned – The second half kicked off with no lights – I understand due to an electrical issue – and after discussing the situation with both managers the referee had no option but to call the game off as the light faded.
