Almost a month since the Nurburgring Endurance Series was last in action, the hugely competitive category resumes at the one and only Nurburgring-Nordschleife this weekend for the fifth round of the season where Brett Lidsey is determined to seal a breakthrough podium.
Having finished in the top four of the Cup5 class during the last two races at the unmistakeable German track, and displaying tremendous pace on both occasions, the 28-year-old from Northfleet is hungrier than ever to seal a maiden podium finish in his rookie campaign in the series.
During the previous round at the beginning of the month, Lidsey and Sorg Rennsport team-mate Ivan Berets shared driving duties in the spectacular four-hour race with third driver Kevin Wolters absent. For round five at the weekend, a new third driver is likely to be present in the No.694 BMW M240i with Wolters having had to withdraw because of commitments with his own team.
Since the start of the delayed 2020 season, Lidsey has made immense progress in the massively popular series. Marking his debut campaign piloting a rear-wheel drive car, and his first in endurance racing altogether, the Lift Out and Dornack supported sportsman really has been a revelation.
Unfortunate VVT sensor failure meant a potential podium bid went awry in the opening round of the rescheduled season in June, but during the double-header race meeting which followed a couple of weeks later Lidsey, Berets and Wolters took a season-best top four result in round three. The finish was a big improvement on a challenging race the day prior, where they took the flag in 11th spot.
Kent’s Lidsey delivered an eye-catching performance in qualifying too on only his second weekend in the category, securing a front-row slot in the Cup 5 class for the first time on a slippery track during a rain-affected session for round three. He then repeated the performance during the next event.
Since the start of the year the trajectory has been one way and the former Renault UK Clio Cup front-runner has become a consistent podium challenger in the Gerri Limonade liveried BMW. Last time out, he also posted the third fastest Cup5 lap of the race to showcase his very real capabilities.
It’s undoubtedly only a matter of time before the multiple Renault UK Clio Cup race winner secures his first silverware in the Nurburgring Endurance Series, and Lidsey very much hopes next Saturday will be the celebratory day.
“It’s been a great season so far, everybody has done a fantastic job at the team and we’re getting so close to the first podium – that’s my only target next weekend”, he commented, “I’ve been really happy with the pace during the last two races, and to be P2 in qualifying as well, and I’m confident we can make the breakthrough for our first top three finish in next Saturday’s race.
“The guys at Sorg Rennsport have got the BMW working really well, it’s fantastic to drive and the perfect car to start my career in endurance racing. Obviously the Nordschleife is such a unique and special challenge, you learn something every time you go back, every lap. I’m really looking forward to being back next weekend, hopefully we’ll have plenty to celebrate.”
