Following Welling United’s 2-2 draw at Weston-super-Mare, co-caretaker manager Tristan Lewis gave his views on the game.
First, he spoke of the mixed emotions after the game. “It would have been a good point, having the journey, and they’re not on a bad run. Having scored (to go back ahead) as soon as they’d equalised, that put us on the front foot, but it’s one of those frustrating ones because there’s three points. We’ve probably got some frustrating players in there (the changing room) but I think it could be a well earned point, and a good point at the end of the season.
“At half time we could have been three nil up, probably without deserving to be three nil up, but a great finish from Coombesie (Adam Coombes), that would grace any league, that finish, Dan Walker had a real good chance at the back post and probably should have done better and Coombes had another one.”
Lewis continued “I thought we were good in the first half but they were always a threat and that’s why, probably, at the end of the day, that’s not a bad point.”
He was less happy about the manner in which Welling conceded. For the first equaliser he said “I thought that was a really sloppy corner to give away which led to the free kick. It was a great free kick and I think he’s one of the strongest players in this league. (Dayle) Grubb.
“The second one, I didn’t think we got out quickly enough, but I don’t want to be critical of the lads. They’ve put a real shift in and it’s a long journey. Fair play., the club have looked after the boys, fantastic coach. You can’t ask for any more so no excuses.”
Questioned about whether he was concerned that Welling were pinned back and defended deeply after the second equaliser, Lewis said “Yes. I think most teams have those issues when that happens. It’s a natural thing. I think the disappointment in taking the lead so soon, the lads get back on the front foot and then they score. They were two good goals they scored and they were always a threat.
“I think it’s natural that we dropped a bit deeper. We were desperately trying to get them up the pitch but on the flip side, if we go too gung-ho, we leave ourselves exposed. Jake Reid is a proven goalscorer at this level and he proved the difference for them a little bit and he pushed us on the back foot. He’s a big strong lad, quick and can score. I can’t be overly critical and we still had a few opportunities on the break.”
“A couple of the lads said that earlier in the season, they thought they may have lost that, that’s positive. I’ve just looked at the other results and they haven’t gone badly for us. Ironically, how we feel about this depends on how Tuesday goes. If we get three points (at Bishop’s Stortford) everyone will say today’s a good result for us.”
Should they claim four points from the two away games, it would give them a good springboard ahead of their home games against Wealdstone and Dartford.
