Cray are on their travels for the first time since September 27th on Saturday as Tony Russell’s in-form side make the trip to Lewes. Kick off at the Dripping Pan is 3pm.
The Wands moved up to fourth on Wednesday night after a fifth straight league win against Guernsey moved Cray within four points of the league leaders, Greenwich Borough.
Cray had to be very patient on Wednesday night as the Wands dominated the game against fairly defensive opponents but the clinical finishing of Danny Haynes who took his tally for the season to nine was enough to secure the three points. Defensively, Cray have also looked good conceding just three goals during the winning run.
The whole team at the moment are looking a very fine unit and with a lot of spirit and are enjoying their football. The mixture of experience and youth has been a terrific blend and throughout the season so far have been a joy to watch.
However, Cray will have to be at their very best on Saturday as Lewes have steadied the ship after a tricky start to the season which included an FA Cup defeat at Sevenoaks Town. Their victory at Walton Casuals on Wednesday kept Darren Freeman’s side in 12th place but just six points behind fifth placed Tooting and Mitcham United who they drew 0-0 with last Saturday.
Wands fans may remember matches against the Rooks in the Ryman Premier days where Cray didn’t have the best of luck and have yet to beat Lewes, with two draws and four defeats. The last time we met at Lewes was in November 2013 with Lewes winning 4-1, with Jack Clark’s goal the ultimate consolation.
Lewes had a lot success at the beginning of the new millennium onwards reaching the Conference in 2007-08 but in recent years have struggled and last season were relegated from the Ryman Premier.
They are a very well supported club and a supporter owned club and do a lot of vital community work and are proof that with a strong core fan base clubs can survive periods of turmoil through dedication and a love for the club.
This should be the game of the day in the Ryman South and a game for the purist.
