Central defender, Harry Lennon, signed a three-year deal with Southend United on Friday.
The academy product made 40 appearances in all competitions for the Addicks, and scored Championship goals against Blackburn and Bristol City.
During his time at The Valley, Lennon had a loan spell with Cambridge, where he made three appearances.
He also impressed in two loan spells at Gillingham, where he made ten appearances, and scored two goals.
Lennon has been plagued by injuries in recent years, which has prevented him getting a run in the team.
Lee Bowyer had this to say:
”I only really worked with Harry when he came back half way through last season. He’s a great pro and he will do well, he just needs a chance.
“He’s a good defender and I wish him all the best. It wasn’t quite working for him at Charlton and you hope it works for him somewhere else because you want people to do well in the game so hopefully he’ll do well.”
Lennon enjoyed his time with the club, and is looking forward to returning The Valley with his new team:
”It has been a privilege to have been part of Charlton for the last 15 years. When I first joined the academy as an eight-year-old, it was always my dream to go on and play for the first team.
” I achieved that and I’d like to thank all of the players, staff and fans who have supported me over the years.
“The last couple of seasons have been frustrating for me and now I’m excited about my new challenge at Southend and I am already looking forward to coming back to The Valley in February.”
Southend boss, Chris Powell, managed Lennon at The Valley and added these thoughts:
“I’m really pleased to bring Lennon to the club, I’ve kept my eye on him for a number of years and he has the attributes and attitude to be a top player.
“He will give us good competition in the centre back area, he has pace, he is left-footed and can handle the ball well which will give us balance in defence.”
Lennon cost the Shrimpers a nominal fee, thought to be in the region of £50,000.
