Former Addicks midfielder, Neil Redfearn, was appointed Leeds’ full time manager on Saturday.
The Whites went down 3-1 at Cardiff, so Redfearn will be keen to win his first game as permanent boss at Elland Road.
Bizarrely, this is the third season in a row that the fixture has been played in midweek and Charlton will once again be backed by a sparse following.
Leeds are on a winless streak of seven games – during which time they have failed to score more than once in a match – and have drawn with Reading and Sheffield Wednesday and lost to Wolves in their last three home games.
The Addicks boast just one win on the road, at Norwich, this season.
New recruit from Arsenal, Francis Coquelain, travelled north with the squad and will play some part in the match.
Of the areas that need strengthening, few would have had a defensive midfielder high up their list. With Coquelain’s loan initially expiring on 1 December, he will be available for the games with Leeds, Reading, Millwall and Ipswich.
The most likely reason for bringing the Arsenal youngster in is that Bob Peeters is looking to change the shape of the team. Igor Vetokele – not yet fully recovered from his Achilles problem – and George Tucudean are the only senior strikers available, so Peeters may opt for a five man midfield, rather play Karlan Ahearne-Grant or a midfielder alongside Tucudean.
Stephen Henderson is in fine form but there is likely to be a change in his defence. Chris Solly does not tend to play in the midweek games, so Lawrie Wilson is likely to step in.
Tal Ben Haim, Andre Bikey and Rhoys Wiggins will complete the back line. Peeters is easing Johann Gudmundsson back into the team gradually and the Icelander may again make his entrance from the bench.
Peeters may be tempted to throw Coquelain in alongside Yoni Buyens as a holding midfield pairing.
Franck Moussa, Jordan Cousins and Johnnie Jackson could play in more advanced roles, with Wilson and Wiggins also being given license to get forward.
Vetokele may again come off the bench rather than be risked from the off. Tucudean could plough a lone furrow up front. Peeters may send team out:
Henderson; Wilson,Ben Haim, Bikey, Wiggins; Buyens, Coquelain; Moussa, Cousins, Jackson; Tucudean.
Subs: Pope, Fox, Onyewu, Gudmundsson, Harriott, Ahearne-Grant, Vetokele.
The referee will be Graham Salisbury from Preston. Salisbury took charge of the Capital One Cup game at Derby.
The game has low scoring draw written all over it, though both managers will naturally be hoping for more.
