Friday 29 April will mark the tenth anniversary of the announcement of Alan Curbishley’s departure from The Valley.
Richard Murray made the announcement prior to the last home game of the season against Blackburn.
Murray wanted his manager to pen a new deal. Curbishley wanted to see out the final year of his contract before committing to a new contract.
Murray argued that it would be difficult to sign the right calibre of player with the manager’s future uncertain.
The pair agreed to part, and Curbs was put on gardening leave. The decision to let the hugely successful manager go kick started the rapid decline of the club. If we could only turn back time.
Rumours suggest that the Addicks are keen to recruit Northampton’s Chris Wilder to head up next season’s League One campaign.
Wilder produced a minor miracle to win the League Two title with cash strapped Northampton this season.
Prior to joining the Cobblers, 49-year-old Wilder enjoyed success with Oxford, who may also be promoted to League One.
Sources in Northampton suggest that the Cobblers will struggle to hold on to Wilder, though reported interest from Bolton has been rebuffed.
Of more immediate concern are the two remaining Championship fixtures. First up is a trip to Elland Road to face Leeds on Saturday.
Leeds fans are disgruntled with owner, Massimo Cellino, so they will have empathy with their visitors.
Jose Riga could have Chris Solly available again. The dual Player Of The Year winner picked up an ankle knock against Derby and has missed the last two games. Riga will have to decide whether to risk the fans’ favourite in this game.
Yaya Sanogo suffered a recurrence of his hamstring problem after coming on as a substitute against Brighton. It seems unlikely that the Arsenal loanee will play again this season.
Igor Vetokele has struggled since making his comeback, and may give way to Simon Makienok.
Charlton may look something like this:
Pope; Motta, Fanni, Teixeira, Fox; Gudmundsson, Cousins, Diarra, Lookman; Makienok, Harriott.
Subs: Mitov, Lennon, Ba, Bergdich, Yun, Jackson, Vetokele.
Keith Hill from Hertfordshire will take charge of the game.
With little to play for, the match is likely to be a low key affair. But the 300 or so Addicks fans making the trip, will be hoping to see a performance to make the long trek worthwhile.
