It was a cold night in Leeds, and little happened on the pitch to warm the fans in the first half. However, the second period was another story.
Thirteen years ago to the day, the Addicks beat Arsenal 4-2 at Highbury in a game that went down in Addicks folklore as Black Sabbath.
Bob Peeters kept faith with the diamond midfield, this time with Johann Gudmundsson at the tip instead of Franck Moussa.
Lawrie Wilson came in for Chris Solly in defence and Callum Harriott replaced Karlan Ahearne-Grant as George Tucudean’s partner at the front.
A fairly uneventful first half saw both sides have their best chance around the half-hour mark.
First an Andre Bikey effort from a Johnnie Jackson corner was cleared off the line, then after a surging run from Tal Ben Haim broke down, Leeds countered and fired into the side netting.
Leeds went ahead four minutes after the restart when Alex Mowatt crashed home a shot from the edge of the area.
The youngster initially mis-kicked but the Addicks failed to close him down and he netted at the second attempt.
Gudmundsson restored parity thirteen minutes later. His effort squeezed past Marco Silvestri at the near post and just crossed the line.
The joy of the Charlton fans was short lived though. Mowatt thundered another long range effort in after 67 minutes.
The visitors had dominated proceedings since levelling but Mowatt’s strike stopped their momentum.
Nine minutes from time, the Addicks launched an attack down the left with bitter sweet results. Rhoys Wiggins won a corner but immediately signalled to the bench that he needed to come off.
It was later reported he had sustained a metatarsal injury, which will sideline him for a lengthy spell.
Tal Ben Haim was fouled by Giuseppe Bellusci as the ball came in from the corner and Gudmundsson despatched the resultant penalty to tie things up again.
Peeters had used all three substitutes and Wiggins’ departure meant the Addicks had to see the game out with ten man.
It was a brave and battling performance that preserved a point.
Francis Coquelain came on for the last half hour and showed some impressive touches. Oguchi Onyewu also made his debut,n his height being deployed up front.
Peeters will be pleased with his night’s work.
