Kuffour keen on Gills stay

Gills striker Jo Kuffour is looking to prolong his stay at Priestfield with his loan from Bristol Rovers due to expire on Friday.

The 30-year-old scored twice in the 2-1 win at Crawley on Boxing Day to take his Gills tally to seven and end the home side’s 15-game unbeaten run.

Kuffour told the Club’s official website: “Hopefully I can extend my stay here, I’ve got one more game left but it’s out of my hands so hopefully the clubs can agree something because I’m enjoying my time here.

“I’m loving it, I’m loving the lads, the fans, the management and I’m enjoying my football again.”

“I think we’ve got a great squad here, not only the first eleven but the whole squad, even the players that weren’t involved today (against Crawley) and that’s only good for the club and hopefully I can extend my stay until at least the end of the season and who knows where we can end up.”

“The fans give us great support home and away. I haven’t known fans like it to be fair. Bristol Rovers fans are good as well, but I like the fans here, they get behind the team and gave us an extra boost in the second half.”

Kuffour is known to be keen on moving to a club closer to his London home, although The Gills could face stiff competition for the striker having found form in recent months.

A number of clubs have been linked with a January transfer window move for Kuffour, however it is believed a fee may be needed by Gillingham if they are to secure his services on a permanent basis.

Whatever happens, it seems unlikely that a deal would be concluded in time for the striker to be available for next Monday’s visit of Aldershot Town with Hessenthaler telling the club’s official website:

“The chairman’s away for Christmas but we’ll be talking over the next couple of days and he’ll have to make the call. He’s briefly spoken to them (Bristol Rovers) but we’ll see where it goes.”

“It might be that we don’t have Jo for Aldershot but hopefully we can sign him that week for the FA Cup game, who knows?”

“Jo wants to come, but at the end of the day he’s not our player. We’ll be trying hard to do that deal or perhaps somebody else, we’ll wait and see.”
