Kruger enjoys Knockhill weekend

Jayde Kruger had yet another solid race weekend last time out in the Formula Ford of Great Britain series at Knockhill.Jayde Kruger at Croft

Whilst he couldn’t oust Dan Cammish from the top step of the podium last time out he is confident that he will soon be standing on the top step as a race winner.

Looking back at the uniqueness of Knockhill and the racing and results Jayde was happy with his performance and positive looking ahead to the next round of the series at Rockingham in two weeks’ time.

He said: “Knockhill is great, I really enjoyed the circuit as it has a lot of character. It’s really challenging with the blind chicane and the drops down the hills. I think it’s fairly similar to most circuits back home, being fairly old school with little room for error. I would put Knockhill in the top two circuits I have driven this season.”

That challenging style that Jayde spoke about was certainly in evidence in race one where he had an interesting race.

He added: “Race one was disappointing.  I got off to a great start and went from fourth up to third and had broken the gap to fourth when the safety car came out allowing the field to bunch up again.

“After the restart we were lacking speed and down the start finish straight, Harrison Scott drove by around my outside. I really wasn’t keen to give up the position and I tried to hang onto the position up the inside into the turn, as we approached the apex, the space I had to work with was getting really tight and in avoiding contact with Scott, I turned in tighter and the back end got away from me resulting in an exciting spin.

“Looking back now, I probably should have given up the position as he was already almost past me but I’m a racer and being passed is not something I enjoy.

“I was happy to have avoided any contact and was able to finish the race with the car in one piece although it’s never good losing out on a podium position. Racing is about all about finding the positive in every situation.

“I made a bad start in race two and dropped back to fifth from my fourth place grid slot. I pushed as hard as I could throughout the race to try to gain the position back but just wasn’t able to get close enough to make a move on Brabham. The team had made quite big changes to the cars for the Knockhill round and I think the pace in general showed throughout the weekend with all three Jamun cars handling well.

“The third race was great for me starting fifth and working my way up to third.  Unfortunately by the time I got to third, the gap had formed between myself and the two front cars and with the times being so close between the front runners, it was difficult to close the gap to second.  The car was running well and it showed, as we had the fastest laps in the last half of the race.

“It’s always great to leave the circuit after a long hard weekend with the promise of a faster car for the next event.  I’m sure the team will be back to making more improvements before we head to Rockingham on the 14th and 15th of September.”

Looking back at the race weekend Jayde was happy to have got through the weekend with a good points haul.

He said: “It was a fairly good weekend.  We left Knockhill as a team, with more insight into how the car works as well as knowing we are heading in the right direction with the tweaks we have planned.  As a driver I gained more track knowledge of British circuits, more time in the car and even more determination to be on the top step at the next race.”

The Championship moves to Rockingham in two weekend’s time and Jayde is looking to try and get onto the top step of the podium.

“Nico drove incredibly well and I think he is the first man who has put pressure on Cammish. Although he didn’t quite get to the top step, we have to take his limited experience compared to Cammish into account. The Rockingham infield section seems as tight as the Knockhill circuit so if we can get the combination of handling through the infield and speed down the long straight, I believe Jamun will be pushing for race wins at Rockingham.

“Three weeks gap seems like a long time but with improvements to be made to the cars, this period is going to be hectic for the team. I will be spending a lot of time keeping my fitness levels up as well as watching as much on-board footage of Rockingham as I can.

“Having never experienced the circuit, the on-board footage helps me get a good idea of the circuit features and gets me up to speed on race day as quickly as possible. I also build and service shocks in my off time. This has been a huge help to me as I have a lot more insight into how the damping works and how it affects the handling of the car.”
