Deal Town are just three points away from the Isthmian League and manager Steve King is keen to see his side get those three points as soon as possible.
After their midweek 2-2 draw with Lordswood, Steve King’s side are now potentially just ninety minutes away from a first League Championship since 2000 as they prepare to welcome Scott Porter and his play-off chasing Lydd Town to the Charles Ground for the biggest fixture seen at the ground in nearly a quarter of a century.
Speaking to KSN after the midweek draw in Medway, the manager confessed frustration that his charges hadn’t finished the job already.
“It was disappointing Tuesday as we missed loads of chances,” King told us.
“We all know that the hardest thing to do in sport is to get over the line and we have played so many games of football and are so very tired.”
“I thought we had done it on Tuesday, I thought we had got the three points; we had a stone wall penalty turned down just going into added on time and then it goes up the other end and we’ve kicked a clearance into one of our own players, it’s come off his back and dropped in the corner. We then hit the post after that, and the rebound went straight back to the keeper!”
“It is what it is and took us a point closer meaning that we can win it on Saturday if we beat Lydd Town at home to seal it.”
“We are having a spell at the minute when things are not quite running for us, but we have got ourselves into a position where we can afford some slip ups, we can afford to drop points!”
“We knew that was the case and we would have preferred not to have taken advantage of that in the last week, but we are still in a good position with five games to go, we need three more points and that is our aim!”
“Our target at the start of the year was to get into the play-offs with our positive target to try and get a home semi-final by coming second or third.”
“A lot of people expected Faversham and the other sides, I think it was hard to target the League title and the fact that we’re in the position that we are in, of course I am highly delighted, but now I want to get across the line!”
“Maybe there is some poetic justice that we can now win it at home. It is one hundred percent not been the thought in the dressing room, we would have loved to have done it at Lordswood, but we will have a big crowd their Saturday now!”
“We have two bites of the cherry now (Deal host Punjab United on Tuesday) to try and secure three points.”
“Our support has been outstanding all season, absolutely superb and if we can get a big crowd at the Charles Ground Saturday it will be great.”
“But Lydd are flying and still trying to get in the play- offs. They are a good side; we know all of their players, it will not be easy and one of our best wins in the season was when we went there on a Wednesday night in January and beat them.”
“But what more incentive do we need? We are tired, we have heavy legs, but when you have a possible Championship on the line, we will find the energy I am sure.”
