Before Concord Rangers entertained Welling United on August Bank Holiday Monday they were second in the Vanarama National League South and yet to concede at the Aspect Arena.
However the Wings dominated from start to finish and claimed an emphatic five goal victory.
After the game, Wings’ manager Steve King was happy that the team had finally turned domination of a game into three points. “We were solid, the foundation we set from the two centre-halves.” he said.
“Thierry (Audel) and Ach (Anthony Acheampong) were magnificent today and I think that set the platform. They’ve got two good forwards here. They’re scoring goals, Alex Wall is the second top scorer in the league, and they’re a handful. They’re second in the league and they are there on merit. A lot of teams will come here and struggle but I thought we did a proper clinical job.”
“We’ve dominated so many of our games, and it’s not just me saying it, it’s been people who have been watching us.”
He continued: “We played decent football and we were clinical. We haven’t been recently, we haven’t been clinical and I think that was a long time over-due, It was going to happen. It had to happen, We’re creating all these chances every single game.”
Time and again Welling’s passing game had Concord chasing shadows and King said “We’ve got that in our locker. There have been other games where we could have scored from open play as well but we’ve got an added extra that we’ve got a free kick taker, a corner taker, that’s second to none. I’ve got to say today that, to a man, they stood up and they were clinical.”
There was a good turnout of Welling supporters and King was eager to thank them for their backing. “A big mention’s got to go out to the fans today because they came in their numbers and really got behind the team which is important to us.
“I think they realise, as well, that we haven’t had the rub of the green in games of late but they know that we put in effort, work and desire. Fans are no mugs. They know when teams are cheating them and things like that but they can see that in the first six games we’ve put everything into our games but we haven’t quite got the rub of the green.”
One down-side to the victory was an early injury sustained by John Paul Kissock. King explained “J.P. has been outstanding but he’s done his knee so I’m not quite sure how long he will be out, maybe three or four weeks. We’ll assess him when the swelling goes down.”
However, that did allow David Ijaha a return to the team and he won virtually every challenge in midfield. “Dave came in and he just shred it up.” said King. Then, once the game was won, he made a further change in midfield. “We put (Arnaud) Mendy in and took Jebby (Jack Jebb) out because he’d been outstanding as well and I thought that we didn’t want to get him injured. Mendy slotted in there and we carried on going.”
King did confirm that he is still considering options to add to the squad, He said: “We are looking to bring a centre forward in. We need a squad and we definitely need another centre forward in, Brad (Bradley Goldberg) and Millsy (Danny Mills) have worked their socks off today and given us everything but we definitely need another forward but I’m not getting carried away because we’ve got five today.”
On Saturday Welling entertain Oxford City at Park View Road, kick-off 15:00.
