King: I decided to take up the opportunity
King: I decided to take up the opportunity

New Gillingham loan signing Billy King has told us why he has completed his move to the club.

Winger King, who has been capped at four different levels by Scotland and after spells at Hearts, Rangers, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Dundee United, admitted that he hadn’t been looking for a move south.

“My Agent contacted me about a week ago telling me that Gillingham wanted me on loan and I decided to take up the opportunity and it’s a great chance to play for a good club in League One and they seemed very interested.

“So, I spoke to the manager and decided to give it a go, and yes I have to admit I did have to look on the map to see where Gillingham is.”

“I didn’t want to Leave Dundee United but if anything came up – and I wasn’t really expecting it – and when it did I jumped at the chance.  I can play left or right wing or in the creative role behind the striker trying my best to influence results.”

“I was at the game the other night, and thought the boys were really unlucky not to come away with all three points – they played really, really well!  And if we start getting the three points rather than the one, we got the other night! Their keeper played really well and when I spoke to the manager and he told me he likes to play many different ways and have attractive ways of playing.”

The new man was asked about the comparison between football North and South of the border; he said, “When I was watching the game the other night, I thought it was a better quality than the Scottish Championship to be honest.  But it’s obviously different when you’re just playing rather than watching and so we’ll see once we get started.

“I like to play attacking football and watching the other night how the team played – I like to play wide or I can play in the middle and like to get at players and get crosses into the box.”

King initially arrives on loan until the end of the season, and at the moment that’s all that the new arrival is focused on.

“I’m not sure what’s going to happen between now and the end of the season – I haven’t met my new team mates yet – but who knows if we make it a success.

“Getting in meeting the boys and doing my first training session with the boys is my sole target for Thursday and hopefully to be involved at Coventry on Saturday.”
