Former Gillingham defender Simon King seems set to agree a deal with Scottish Premier League side Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

The 29 year old central defender was released by The Gills at the end of last season, having spent five years at Priestfield, and had been expected to be offered a new deal, but was deemed surplus to requirements.

King has spent some time assessing his options and played for Inverness in their pre-season game against Elgin at the weekend and seems to have done enough to impress manager Terry Butcher with the former England central defender telling the Inverness Courier that King could be his last summer signing:

“I was very pleased with Simon at Elgin,” he said. “He needed the game as he’s not played that much competitive football over the last year due to injury.

“He’s a player of exceptional quality and also talks very well, while at 29 he has good experience as well, which is what we’ve tried to add to the squad this summer.

“David Raven and Gary Warren are both 27, so if we can bring Simon in then it would certainly benefit the younger players.

“I am hopeful something can be done with regards to Simon, but if that happens then I would expect that to be it in terms of new signings.

“However, I’m very pleased with the quality that we’ve managed to bring in.”

King was always regarded as a fans favourite at Gillingham, despite an injury plagued couple of seasons between 2009 and 2011.
