Kent have named a 12-man squad for their 50-over game against Sri Lanka tomorrow, and it features a number of new and younger faces.
The club’s vice-captain, 24-year-old Sam Northeast, will lead the side taking on the current World T20 champions, with seven players brought into the squad who were not involved in Kent’s LV= County Championship draw with Derbyshire, which finished yesterday.
Last season’s captain James Tredwell, likely to be lining up against the Sri Lankans for England next week, is brought back into the side, with the squad also featuring the likes of Fabian Cowdrey, Alex Blake, David Griffiths and Charlie Hartley.
Northeast is one of five members of the team who took on Derbyshire to be included, the others being Daniel Bell-Drummond, Ben Harmison, Sam Billings and Adam Ball.
That leaves captain Rob Key, Brendan Nash, Darren Stevens, Mitch Claydon, Adam Riley and Doug Bollinger all rested, most likely with the fact that Kent’s next Championship game at Gloucestershire gets underway on Sunday, in mind.
Robbie Joseph, who featured in Kent’s first three First Class matches of the season, is also named in the squad.
Imran Qayyum, recently awarded a development contract by Kent, is likely to take on 12th man duties.
On releasing their squad details, Kent also took the opportunity to give an update on the health of seam bowler Mark Davies, who is scheduled to undergo a scan next week to further investigate his bicep and shoulder injury.
Speaking about the squad that was selected, Kent Head Coach Jimmy Adams said: “We are keen to give the young players exposure against world class opposition.”
“It is also important for us to view the potential limited overs match options we have going forward.”
The Sri Lanka squad features some of the biggest and most famous faces in world cricket, including Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and former-Kent bowler Lasith Malinga.
The Sri Lankans take on England in a T20 international on Tuesday next week before kicking off a five-match ODI series on Thursday.
Tomorrow’s match will begin at 2pm at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence in Canterbury, and tickets are still available; details and prices of which can be found at www.kentcricket.co.uk.
