Kent County Cricket Club have announced that they have secured the signing of former Glamorgan batsman Mike Powell.

Powell has agreed a two year deal at Canterbury and will fill the void Martin van Jaarsveld left in the middle order.

The Welsh born right-handed batsman has appeared in 212 first-class games and has signed to Kent following his release from Glamorgan.

The 34-year-old had played for Glamorgan since making his first-class debut in 1997, before being released at the end of 2011. Powell has scored almost 11,500 first-class runs at an average approaching 40, and is seventh in Glamorgan’s list of all-time leading run-scorers.

He has posted 25 first-class centuries, more than 4,600 one-day runs for Glamorgan and scored 1,000 runs in a season five times.

Kent Cricket’s Chairman of Cricket, Graham Johnson commented on the signing; “We are delighted to be able to announce that Michael will be coming to Kent. He has had a very successful career with Glamorgan, and still has much to offer County Cricket. We look forward to his contributions for the Club over the next two years.”

Michael Powell commented; “I am looking forward to making the move to Kent. I’m extremely pleased to have signed this contract with the Club. I hope to make a positive impact next season and look forward to the challenges ahead at Kent County Cricket Club.”

Powell becomes Kent’s latest signing with former Nottinghamshire seamer Charlie Shreck agreeing to play for the county from next season.
