Kent Roller Girls knocked Leicestershire’s Dolly Rockit Rollers out of orbit with a victory of over 50 points at the weekend.
Due to some injuries in training it was a reduced Kent All Star team of 10, rather than the usual 14, that made the journey up the M1 on Saturday.
Perhaps it was the knowledge that they were going to have to work harder that led to the girls in gold going out strong with jammer Mayjour Collision putting the first points on the board for Kent.
There were some solid performances notably by Fleetfoot Mac, who racked up the points in the power jams (where the oppositions scorer is in the penalty box) to help Kent stretch out their lead and earning her a well-deserved Most Valuable Player award.
On the defence side there was fearsome blocking by Whizz Skid and Diagnosis Maul’er who sent several of the Dollies players flying with big hits.
The Dollies seemed to regroup at half time and were edging back accumulating points by forcing mistakes and getting penalty calls on the Kent players.
However, some strategic time outs were called by Bench Coach Ben-Ten-Derizer to calm down the game and Kent switched their strong defence back on, with co-captain Rosa Lethal orchestrating a wall of blockers which seemed virtually impenetrable.
Kent player Killa Knightly summed up their 177 – 119 victory – “The Dollies are an awesome team, great fun to play. It felt amazing to put on the gold colours of Kent and come away with the win!”
KRG Skaters were also represented in the mixed opening game of the 90s themed bout, with Storm and The Toppler Effect, representing the winning side New Kids on the Blockers versus their usual team mates Muscle Crowe and Hadrian’s Brawl who played for the nattily named MC Jammers.
Three of the Kent players picked up awards for their skills at Jamming and Blocking. Over in Essex, Anti-Syl-Clone was playing in a mixed game with Jo-Commotion, who was named Most Valuable Player in a game their side won.
Head of Training, Alex said, “I couldn’t be prouder of the dedication and commitment of the whole team: it’s not only those on track but a range of people who make KRG amazing, from the injured players who came to support us, our volunteers who sell merchandise to help us support our running costs and the non-skating officials and referees. You all make my job so worth it.”
Kent Roller Girls next outing will be a home bout at Herne Bay Arena on 7th June 2014 against the Portsmouth Roller Wenches.
