Kent Roller Girls continued their winning streak as they travelled to Guildford to take on Plymouth City Roller Derby as part of the Division 3 South of the British Roller Derby Championships.
Kent looked strong from the outset, racking up points before Plymouth managed to get any on the board. Plymouth were determined but only managed 13 to Kent’s 158 by half-time.
Despite being the first to score after the half-time break, Plymouth continued to be dominated by Kent as KRG’s scoring jammers Tenacious and Foxygen carried on the scoring streak. The game finished with Kent on 277 to Plymouth’s 35. Despite the large differential both teams agreed that it was a great game.
Plymouth awarded the Most Valuable Player award to KRG’s founder, Canterbury’s Demi Lition, who was formidable on track in both defence and offence despite this being her first game back after a long break. Best jammer went to Tenacious, who lives in Tonbridge, who showed off her trademark ducking and diving, and best blocker went to the formidable Roxy Rink Rash, from Maidstone.
The win puts Kent at the top of the table and guarantees them a place at the promotion playoffs in September. On 23 July they travel to Guildford again to face off against Cornwall. Both county teams are equal on points, having won all of their games in the championships, but Kent lead on score differential. Kent need to win against Cornwall to finish the season top of the division and therefore go into playoffs in a stronger position.
Roller derby is a fast-paced contact sport played on roller skates. The object of the game is to score more points than the other team by lapping opposing skaters on the track. Each team has one scoring player (a jammer) who is trying to pass opposing players. The rest of the team are blockers, whose job it is to stop the opposing jammer getting past whilst helping their own jammer to advance.
If you’re interested in giving roller derby a go, Kent Roller Girls run their training league at the Herne Bay Sports Arena every Sunday. You don’t need to know how to skate and training is offered to accommodate all levels. For more information go to kentrollergirls.com or find them on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
