Kent Kings vs Poole Pirates preview

For many fans, the appearance on the fixture list for the Kent TouchTec Kings’ inaugural SGB Championship season of the Poole Pirates was going to be a highlight.

That day for the Dorset club to visit Central Park for a first-ever time is nearly upon us – it’s this coming Tuesday, 27th. July 6.30pm start time.

The Pirates have certainly plundered plenty of silverware in their time – including an unmatched eight top flight league titles this century alone and they come to Kent fielding an awesome trio of heat leaders.
Maidstone-born Danny King has already hugely impressed his home county’s  Speedway-going public by coming to Central Park and breaking the long held track record in his very first outing around the placed!  That was Guesting for Plymouth back in June but it’s for the other south coast club Poole he plies his racing trade and the former British Champion will doubtless have his own best time in his sights along with plenty of points on Tuesday.

That same match versus Plymouth saw Steven Worrall guesting for the TouchTec Kings – and as on a previous appearance in a similar role the St. Helens’ racer was a prolific scorer.  It’s for the visitors that the Kent fans now have a grin and bear the return of his very popular Central Park track specialist now.

And if Danny King is yet another ex-British Champion visiting Central Park (with Kent of course led themselves by a record seven-times holder of that coveted national title in Scott Nicholls) then in the form of Rory Schlein, Poole have the current title holder.  The first ever Australian born winner of the British Final, the 36 year old is in his final year in the sport in the UK and as well as that British Final win in 2020, is a twice winner of the top division Riders’ Championship and was 4th. in the World U21 Championship Final back in 2004.

With Poole’s other Aussie Ben Cook the victim of a very bad crash on Friday up at Redar and doubts over a work permit for their intended target Czechian Ondrej Smetana, the full line up for the visitors on Tuesday is a bit in doubt but will include two hugely promising Brits in twice British U-19 Champion in 2012 and 2013, Stefan Nielsen and a rider very well known to the Central Park faithful from his appearances last term for the Leicester side which pipped Kent to the National League title, Danyon Hume.

For the hosts there are selection questions still with both Cameron Heeps’ fitness and a possible new signing still things which look like going to the wire in terms of this week’s home match.  What isn’t in doubt is the very good form Nicholls, former Poole rider Paul Starke and terrific teen Daniel Gilkes are in and with Paul Hurry (also a one-time Pirates rider) back in the grove it promises to be a very exciting evening’s racing on which the gates open at 5pm with people able to pay on the door this Tuesday (27th. July).
