The road to National Trophy [NT] glory takes another potential turn (and even a possible twist) on Bank Holiday afternoon today (Monday 27th), with current Group leaders and holders Mildenhall Fen Tigers visiting Central Park Stadium.
For the record seven-times NT winners from Suffolk, it’s close to being the last chance saloon in their bid for an unprecedented hat trick of titles (having secured Speedway’s third tier’s Trophy in 2017 & ’18) – nothing other than a win is required for the side captained by former Kings’ favourite Danny Ayres.
The destiny of the NT took a major swing the Sunday before last when a depleted Kings; side went to fortress West Row (where Mildenhall had been unbeaten for 18 months) and came away with a two points victory – now, in the return fixture today, Malcolm Vasey’s charges know that only at least a turnaround of that magnitude will keep their hopes alive,
Joining Ayes in a potent heat leader trio is teenager prodigy with plenty of Central Park experience in spite of his youthful years Jason Edwards and 35 year old, late-bloomer David Wallinger, who conversely has not been seen too often at Kent making him a far more unknown quantity, Matt Marson is an Aussie who actually first made a Fens Tiger away appearance at Kent in 2017 and this time last year in Mildenhall’s last NT visit scored an impressive paid 11 – his form could be the crucial factor in this one.
Results this week in the NT with Isle of Wight taking two match points away from their visit to Plymouth means that the Warrior islanders have given themselves a late outside chance of snatching an unlikely trophy win as they face the TouchTec Kings twice in eight days after tomorrow – but Chris Hunt knows his team have the destiny of the silverware in their own hands with a win tomorrow meaning they could then clinch glory on Thursday when they venture over the Solent. Having said that, if Mildenhall get something out of the match it will take the NT battle to the wire.
The TouchTec-sponsored Kings will have to go into both matches without two of their declared seven – Alex Spooner out with a damaged shoulder; Dan Gilkes, with a pelvic injury. Jacob Clouting continues to deputise at reserve and it’s the Rider Replacement facility with Kent need to use to cover Spooner’s rides.
Co-promoter Len Silver knows this a very close to call match up,
“I was impressed with some of the Fen Tigers’ riders last Sunday, there are some impressive performers in their side. They are bound, I think, to like our circuit which is much easier to ride than their own, so I’m expecting a very exciting afternoon’s racing”.
That excitement starts at 4pm with gates open at 2.30pm and the parade at 3.40pm (including MunchKings Kids’ Club presentations).
