Journeyman Kent footballer Peter Overton who graced many colours during his career has lost his brave fight against an inoperable Brain Tumour – he was 43.
Overton was diagnosed with the tumour in May 2017 and sadly passed away in the early hours of Wednesday
It’s been written that he was a “skilful and popular midfielder”, Pete played for various senior non- league clubs in the county during the 1990s and early 2000’s, yet wherever he played he was one of those players who enjoyed an incredible relationship with all of his side’s supporters.
Overton will most notably be remembered for spells at Sittingbourne, Tonbridge Angels and Maidstone United – yet despite the respective rivalries between the clubs, Peter was always either the hero or the “villain” dependant on the colour of his shirt at the time.
This incredible feeling was shown when a benefit match at the Gallagher Stadium in 2017 in which many of his friends and players took part.
The Tonbridge website reported his wife Nadine said: “My amazing husband sadly lost his battle this morning, he fought to the very end and was surrounded with love the whole time.”
PERSONAL COMMENT FROM MIKE GREEN – KSN FOOTBALL EDTOR – “It’s been said in the past that the mould was broken when a certain person was born – that is so true of Peter Overton as he never left anything on the pitch – suffered more than his fair share of “early baths”, but was an old fashioned player who gave 100pct, 1,000pct of the time.”
“I really got to know Pete through Sunday morning football in the Medway Towns – the Overton who donned so many colours on a Saturday was the same one who turned up on a Sunday albeit occasionally a bit worse for wear… Yet as soon as that first whistle went, the focused Ovy was there and was there until the end of the game. All the grief and abuse you were given during the game evaporated at the Final Whistle, and now that his own final whistle has been blown, all that knew him over came across him on the football pitch, all have our own memories which will be forever cherished!”
