Kent should have their squad bolstered with an overseas signing next week ahead of the new Twenty 20 season.Vernon Philander2

Fans will be delighted to know that Kent are looking at bringing in a high calibre fast bowler to supplement their squad for the entire T20 campaign.

Although not naming names, it is believed South African Vernon Philander tops Jimmy Adams’ wish list and he told KSN how he is close to seeing someone come to Canterbury:

“We’re pretty close to getting an overseas bowler. I will leave the office to announce that, but there are areas where we have work to do and someone coming in would be a good addition.”

“We know we have certain areas where we need to improve and someone with international experience will help that.”

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Jamie Clifford believes an overseas signing could be just what the club is looking for to help them compete in the shorter format of the game:

“Pending a visa and a few other bits of paperwork we will be in a position to make an announcement on the signing early next week.”

“He is somebody that will hopefully turn heads and he’s a player of international calibre, proven on the international stage and will be with us for a period.”

“I think it’s an important step for us, although it’s not done yet as there are a few bits of paperwork we still need to do.”

“The T20 phase is what we are focusing on and we felt that if we were going to focus on anything now, we wanted to inject something into the Twenty 20 campaign, so that was our focus when we looked at who was available in the market.”

“I think we have found somebody that will add a lot to that phase of the season.”

The Spitfires will go into the new campaign next week with renewed confidence after Wednesday night’s record breaking three wicket win over Sussex Sharks in the YB40 and play New Zealand under the lights at Canterbury on Saturday evening.

Play gets underway at 7pm with tickets available from www.kentcricket.co.uk
