Kent played themselves into a reasonable position after day one of the historic day/night Championship game at Canterbury.
Starting at the unusual start time of 2pm, Kent won the toss and elected to bat first going into the unkown facing the pink tiflex ball for the first time.
It soon became apparent that the pink ball did very little for the seamers and it was the spinners that had devastating effect on a slow St Lawrence wicket with wickets falling at regular intervals.
Only Joe Denly and Geraint Jones seemed to really master the pace of the wicket and the dulling colour of the pink ball as Kent finally posted 237 all out.
Denly continued his fine run of form hitting 69 whilst Jones posted an obdurate 48 before being one of John Glover’s four victims of the day.
With the lights having come on at 5:30pm and the daylight all but having gone at just after 7pm, it was clear that playing at this time was some what unusual with fans scattered around the St Lawrence Ground, some braving the wind and the cold in sleeping bags and other winter attire.
There was still time for Kent to get five overs at Glamorgan, four of them maidens and the visitors blocked their way to 2 for 0 with the clock having just ticked past the scheduled finish time of 9pm.
All in all the experiement seemed to have had a mixed reaction from spectators with various dignitaries from the MCC and ECB watching on to see the effects of playing with the pink ball under the lights.
Only time will tell as to whether this will be a winner in the long run, but it is fair to say that Monday 12th September 2011 will go down as an historic day in Kent’s history.
