Kent battle to Canterbury draw

Some resolute batting helped Kent to a draw against Glamorgan at Canterbury after being forced to follow on with Darren Stevens scoring a century.Cricket - County Championship Division Two - Kent v Glamorgan - Canterbury, England - Day 4

Having found themselves up against it after the first three days of the game, Kent battled hard and showed some real spirit to come away with a draw.

With Glamorgan bowling Kent out for just 135 in their first innings and enforcing the follow on with a lead of 253 runs, it seemed as though it was going to be an uphill battle for Geraint Jones’ side, but they showed real character to dig themselves out of a hole and ended up leading by 246 runs when the game was declared a draw shortly before 5pm on Saturday.

Resuming the day on 254 for 4, a lead of just 11 runs, both Stevens and Ben Harmison set about making the game safe with some attacking cricket.

The pair were to ultimately put on 163 runs for the fifth wicket with Harmison’s 118 ball stay ended when he was on 64 as he was run out by Michael Hogan.

Darren Stevens’ fine run with the bat continued as he brought up yet another century for Kent, taking just 134 balls to bring up his ton which was to include 16 fours and 2 sixes when he was finally out for 119.Cricket - County Championship Division Two - Kent v Glamorgan - Canterbury, England - Day 4

Stevens was to become Dean Cosker’s third victim of five in the day, but it will be the Kent batsmen that take credit from the game as they blunted the Glamorgan attack.

Despite Geraint Jones (15), Calum Haggett (17) and Mitchell Claydon (40) all falling before the close, Kent were to negotiate their way to safety, batting just beyond tea before the two teams decided the game wasn’t going to see a positive result.

Kent take five points from the game and now switch their attention to the YB40 game against Sussex Sharks at the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence on Wednesday evening.

Play is scheduled to start at 4:40pm.
