Visits to Doncaster will always evoke memories of a game played at the Keepmoat in late January 2014.

Roland Duchatelet had just taken over the club, and one of the first issues the new owner had to deal with was the Valley pitch.

It had been neglected for years and there were real problems with it during the 2013/14 season. The FA Cup third round tie with Oxford had to be postponed twice.

When it was eventually played, the Addicks quickly went two goals down against their lower league opponents.

It took a second half goal from Michael Morrison, and a late Yann Kermorgant equaliser, to take the tie to a replay at the Kassam.

A Yann Kermorgant brace sandwiched a Danny Green strike, as Charlton cruised to a 3-0 win.

Chris Powell’s team travelled to Huddersfield for the fourth round‎ game just three days later. A solitary Simon Church goal won the game for the south Londoners.

Church s‎cored the winner in the fifth round at Hillsborough, after Sheffield Wednesday had cancelled out Callum Harriott’s opener.

Dreams of a Wembley semi-final appearance were extinguished in the quarter-finals, when Wednesday’s bitter rivals, Sheffield United, eliminated‎ the Addicks at Bramall Lane.

The excitement of a rare cup run masked the growing concern about Charlton’s league position. The cup run led to a fixture backlog, and the Addicks were floundering at the wrong end of the table.

Three days after that Huddersfield game, Charlton faced Doncaster at the Keepmoat.

Powell decided to keep the team in Yorkshire to prepare for the game, rather than return to London and travel back north a couple of days later.

The move was not popular with the players, and it is conjecture whether it had any effect on the Doncaster match, but the Addicks turned in an abject performance and lost 3-0.

Lawrie Wilson was sent-off in the first-half for denying a clear goal scoring opportunity. Three players wore a Charlton shirt for the last time in that match.

Yann Kermorgant left for Bournemouth, Dale Stephens joined Brighton and, surprisingly, Ben Alnwick went to Leyton Orient.

That night at the Keepmoat was the nadir of the season. It would be nice if this time around, Karl Robinson’s side use the game as a springboard to a successful season.
